Russia and Kazakhstan adopt a joint action plan

Borovoye (Akmola region), December 19 2008

On Friday Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed a joint statement adopting a Kazakh-Russian joint action plan for 2009-2010, said a correspondent from Interfax-Kazakhstan.

"This plan is a detailed specification of the general agreements existing between our countries. It covers all fundamental aspects upon which we reached agreements during my visit (to Kazakhstan - Interfax-Kazakhstan) and the cross-border cooperation forum," Medvedev told Nazarbayev at their meeting.

"If we follow the plan, I am sure, we will be able to keep up the pace we have gained during the last years," the Russian president stressed.

According to him, "it is very important because even earlier a lot depended on the cooperation between our countries." "Our countries are very close to each other, their economies are genetically interconnected," he said.

"Today when very many international processes have merely come to a stop, when the largest partners and close countries are facing a global crisis of financial confidence, our relations have to be more fleshed-out and efficient," Medvedev said.

According to the Kazakh president's press office, the action plan is aimed at stepping up the strategic partnership and alliance between Russia and Kazakhstan and suggests taking further joint efforts in the short-term period.

The plan has 40 action items embracing all aspects of the Kazakh-Russian relations.

As reported, on December 19-21 Medvedev participated in an unofficial meeting of the CIS presidents which was organized on the initiative of Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev and held in Borovoye, central Kazakhstan.
